Instead of offering a traditional offseason primer for each team this offseason, I will examine each team from the perspective of the San Antonio Spurs.

What this means is that, yes, I’ll still discuss where each team’s cap sheet stands heading into the offseason, however, I’ll also be looking at upcoming free agents and whether any of the players under contract would be good fits for the Spurs, especially at positions of need with defensive bigs and outside wing shooters.

Utah Entering the Draft

Let’s begin with the Utah Jazz out West, who had the worst record in the league at 17-65. By winning only 17 games, the Jazz have put themselves in a prime position to try to get lucky in the NBA Draft Lottery, with a 14% chance of landing the number one overall pick to draft Cooper Flagg. The Jazz will also have the Minnesota Timberwolves’ first-round pick, projected to land 21st in the first round.

Jazz Cap Sheet, Exceptions, and Roster Decisions

When examining the Jazz cap sheet, they are projected to be an over-the-cap team this summer.

The Jazz have 17 players under contract for the upcoming season, including 12 players with guaranteed contracts, which include the two first-round picks. John Collins has a player option decision to make by June 27, along with four players on non-guaranteed deals: KJ Martin, Svi Mykhailiuk, Johnny Juzang, and Jaden Springer. The Jazz have until June 30 to decide on Svi and Juzang’s non-guaranteed deals.

If the Jazz operate as an over-the-cap team, they will have access to the $14.1 million non-tax mid-level exception and the $5.1 million bi-annual exception to sign free agents or to acquire players in trades.

Unless Collins declines his player option, the Jazz will have only two players entering free agency: two-way players Micah Potter and Oscar Tshiebwe, who can become restricted free agents.

Are any Jazz free agents a good fit for the Spurs?
